WebMaster Mike

hello,

just installed ms messenger 6.0 and like all the new features. the problem
that i am having is that i seem to be running 4.7 along with 6.0. especially
when i open outlook express. it can't seem to tell the difference between
the two. i went to the control panel to delete the 4.7 version but can't
find it. only the 6.0 version is listed. this is not a real big problem, but
i still want to get it fixed. anyone's help would be appreciated.

thanks

WebMaster Mike

Hi,

The version 4.7 you have is WINDOWS Messenger, whereas the 6.0 is MSN
Messenger. There's a difference. I'd choose the MSN version because it has
more options. You can get rid of Windows Messenger by doing the following:
- Close Windows Messenger and all programs that are linked to it ... e.g.
Outlook Express
- Go to Start - Run
- Type the following code, or better copy and paste:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
- Confirm and the program will be removed.

Greetings Mike,

You can remove Windows Messenger (the "old one"), but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run Windows Messenger
when Windows starts'. As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel,
Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger
in the components list and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed
Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This
won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN
Messenger to work properly.

Also, you'll probably want to stop Windows Messenger from loading with Outlook Express. To
do this, close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:
