Messenger 4.7 keeps prompting after installing MSN MEssenger 6.0

Hi,

I had Windows Messenger 4.7 which recently started
complaining it was too old, and to "click here" to get a
more recent version. Which I finally did and installed
consequently MSN Messenger 6.0.

BTW I have all the critical updates on Win XP.

Although Messenger had always been configured not to
launch with Windows, it keeps poping all the times that
it's an old version, toclick to get a newer one!

I logged as ADMIN and uninstalled Windows Messenger 4.7,
as I thought Messenger 6 was too stupid to upgrade 4.7 and
I can see both programs. Even after uninstalling, it
still keeps popping all the times (still, both were
configured NOT TO launch with Windows).

How do (should I ?) get rid of the old version, or if I
get rid of the newer one, what do I do to stops this
program from bugging me all the times (not only on Windows
launch, but many many times during sessions where I'm not
working on internet?

Thanks,

Rob

Dear Rob, the same happened to me. I deleted parts of the registry just to
get rid of WM that every day arose from its ashes and disconnected me at
irregular intervals from the net. Some one advised to uncheck Norton
AntiVirus' option to scan messages from messenger. Having done this I even
reinstalled the deleted parts of my registry, reinstalled Windows Messenger
and have no trouble any more.

I hope this helps.

Erik.

u donut - you havent updated properly.
windows messenger 4.7 needs to be updated to the latest
version of windows messenger 4.7.2009 or 5 i think.

u have "updated" to msn messenger (v6) - a different
product entirely (although it still uses some wm
components)even if that dopey mob at ms insist on calling
it pratically the same name.

Thats why it keeps asking you to update..because
technically u havent yet!

no offence - i did the same thing and thats the exact
wording of our IT support engineer! lol

Despite similar appearance between WM and MSNM, you may have noticed that
the programs in question have differing names.. this was not a 'slip-up' by
Microsoft.. they truly believed that users would recognize the difference in
spelling too..

Uninstall MSNM 6 and then reinstate WM5..

The popup that has been appearing was sent to all .NET id's regardless of
operating system used as Microsoft would be unaware of what OS was being
used by individuals..

And yes, the look and feel are the same intrinsically.. the same could also
be said of a fully loaded BMW 318i and its sister, the BMW 325i.. however, a
look under the hood reveals a very different engine, hence the different
numbers..

BTW.. There has been a release of Windows Messenger 5 recently..
