Messaging while offline

Hello,

I've had two strange incidents with Windows Messenger 5 (on XP HE SP2) and
I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences.

First, one of my contacts appeared 'offline' and yet she was chatting
with me. She told me that I appeared as 'offline' to her as well and yet
here we were sending messages to each other.

Second, a 'blocked' contact initiated a chat with me today. Her status
remain blocked while we were messaging each other.


How is this possible?

Messenger actually uses separate connections for each conversation window. Thus meaning, you
can actually get connected from the main server (what updates the contact list) and then you
appear offline, yet your connection to the conversation server (termed the "switchboard")
still remains.

Were you able to respond to what the blocked user was saying to you? If so, are you sure it
was the same Passport that you've blocked? I ask because Messenger [the application] will
refuse to allow you to type to a user that is blocked.

Thanks for your reply. What concerns me most is that a "blocked" user was
able to see me as online and send me a message. I believe I responded to
them while they were still blocked, but I'm not 100% sure.

I have a number of blocked users and I no longer trust MSN. What is a
fail-safe way to make sure that the users no longer see me?
