Messages disappear from inbox after re-insatall

I was working with a guy who had multiple problems with his PC, so we decided
to re-install XP. I didn't worry about backing up his email, because his
account is on an Exchange server. After re-installing XP and Outlook, it
seems that all of the messages prior to the re-install have somehow
disappeared from his inbox. Other folders - deleted items, junk mail, etc. go
back several years, but the inbox only goes back 3 days. I tried using web
mail to look at his inbox and it also only goes back 3 days.

Any ideas?

did you take a close look at his outlook before reinstalling? Sounds like he
had a pst file he was putting all incoming mail into...
