Message: Video capture device- <none>

After reading as much as I could, I now realize that I need a video capture
device to record. I have a SONY VAIO laptop computer and a Panasonic mini DV
camera. I connect the camera to the computer via DV port/ USB port. When I
try to record with Movie Maker, I get a message saying: Audio Device- VIA
Audio [WAVE], Video Device- <none>. Am I missing something? What exactly is
a video capturing device, and is there one already in my computer somewhere
that I haven't found? Do I have to buy it separately? An answer would be
appreciated, because I'm getting VERY frustrated because I'm tired of driving
all the way to my school to use a Mac. Thanks for the help.

Really? Is there a firewire cable that connects to PC? I have a firewire
cable, but it only goes from my camera to a Mac. My computer doesn't have a
slot for the firewire that I have. My camera, like I said, came with a cord
that can connect my camera to my computer by USB. The non-USB side is a
different shape than firewire (it's MUCH smaller than firewire, and it has
the letters DV on it). Anyway, thanks for the info.

We have a bit of a problem here, as you cannot connect via dvport/usb port,
they are totally different, so you either use dv port
(IEEE1394/firewire/i-link) or usb.
For video capture use firewire, not usb.

Hello,

Be careful about that DV connection you referred to. One of my machines has
a firewire connection AND a DV connection. The DV socket which I have still
not tried out has possibly 14 or 16 pins (can't be bothered to go look) and
is about 2 x 0.5 cm in aspect There is a similar socket on my Sat receiver
and on a DVD/TV recorder I did a small amount of reading and it was quite
clear that they have nothing to do with the firewire standard.

Just thought I would let you know what I discovered.

DV should stand for digital video. Not having a sat receiver like John I
can't check that out, interesting if other people are using what have
become common names now for something else. I wouldn't have minded checking
that out.

Firewire has 3 types of connection.
4 pin, 6 pin and 9 pin for the new firewire 800.
Check out
http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=firewire&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images
for some pictures.
You can check in device manager if the pc has firewire, it is the same
connection as the Mac, and you can buy firewire pcmcia cards quite cheaply.
Laptops generally have 4 pin connections the same as the cam, whereas I
believe Macs tend to have the larger 6 pin as a standard.

Which panasonic cam do you have?
It says dv on the lead or the port on the cam?
