Message stuck in outbox

Using the new and exciting Windows Mail 6.0 client in Vista and there seems
to be a problem that has me baffled. McAfee Security centre v.7 is installed
scanning mail in and out. Mail has gotten stuck in the outbox and any attempt
to view, move delete or otherwise manipulate it gets replied with "unknown
error has occurred" and "message cannot be displayed" for no specified
reason. So I tried renaming the windows mail folder and allowing windows mail
to create it again, then tried to import using the Windows Mail 7 (only
available version) to reclaim the old mail files. Well nothing turns up
except the file structure in an imported folder. What a PITA this program is.
Any ideas on how to fix this, Windows Mail 7 doesn't seem to exist anywhere
yet... HELP!!

Do you have your system backed up to an external hard drive or elsewhere?

Here is what I did. I restored, Windows Mail only, to a date that Windows
Mail was working properly. Then I used Steve's utility to compact my
e-mail. Plus I compact my e-mail every time the dialog box appears.
