you posted this a couple of days ago. can you explain what the command does
and when you might need to use it?
"expand X:\i386\system.dr_ %systemroot%\system.drv - where X is the cd drive
letter"

thanks.

system.drv is a driver file. Are you getting an error message relating to
the file? Search Windows Explorer for the file - you may find it in the
windows\system32\dllcache folder. If so, try copying it to the
windows\system32 folder.

Failing that, put the XP CD in the cd drive and type the following from
Start>Run:

expand X:\i386\system.dr_ %systemroot%\system.drv - where X is the cd drive
letter.

Steve;

Search Help and Support for: Expand.

[[Expand
Extracts a file from a compressed file. Use this command to extract a driver
file from a cabinet (.cab) or compressed file.
Expand
Expands one or more compressed files. This command is used to retrieve
compressed files from distribution disks.]]

The file system.dr_ is the compressed or zipped version of system.drv.
Note how the file extension is *.dr_ not *.drv. The _ shows that it's
a compressed file.

Help and Support is *full* of good info. :blush:)

that's helpful but why would it not be replaced by WFP for instance?

Steve;

I have no earthly idea. But some files don't get
fixed/replaced. Maybe they're not on the list.
Like *.inf files for example.

Protected File List
[[WFP protects files with the following extensions that are installed by
Windows: .dll, .exe, .ocx, and .sys. In addition, the TrueType fonts
Micross.ttf, Tahoma.ttf, and Tahomabd.ttf are also protected.]]

MSINFO32.INF and msinfo32.exe for example. I don't
understand everything, but MSINFO32.INF has instructions
on how msinfo32.exe should be set up. Registry entrie, etc.

You can read more here:
scannow sfc (sfc.exe)
