"Message cannot be found" in Sent Items

I'm usually the one handing out advice instead of asking for it,
but this morning the tables are turned. After one month of flawless
operation, Windows Mail reports "Message cannot be found" when
clicking in the message list on any of the 12 most recent messages
in my Sent Items folder. Those 12 are all posts to this newsgroup,
but I have other sent posts to the same newsgroup which display
just fine. Any ideas?

I am using Computer Associates antivirus with the mail scanning
turned off. No third party anti-spam or anti-malware.

Reboot is the first thing. Then if it continues, blow away the message store
folder and not use the shortcut work around of deleting just the
messagestore files.... It's not worth the hassle of trying to sort out why
it's happening because as you've found out, it will suddenly byte you (pun
intended) out of nowhere. It's easier to just move the current store,
restart WInMail and let it create a new one then drag and drop the old mails
backinto WinMail.

Other than the usual McAfee and Norton's SNAFU, I don't think it's got much
to do with AV or Anti-spam software and more within the db itself. With the
DBX files, we had a serious problem with fragmentation. Look at the size of
these db's for WinMail, possible cause again as well?

Do you retain the read messages or delete them when after a while? (Right
click on the newsgroupo name, select Properties then Local File tab)

That sucks. If you know the message subjects you can search (using
Explorer) for that in the message store looking for nws files.

You might try compacting and repairing database with WMUtil to see if that
helps at all.

See how many non-zero byte files are actually in the message store Sent
Items directory and see if it corresponds to the number of messages reported
by the database.
