MESS

I have made a true mess of things inside my computer. I got a computer from
a friend to work with. If anyone can walk me through this mess, I would
greatly appreciate it. Here is what I have:
1. Quantum Fireball ST - This has a bigger cable connection 50pin?
2. Quantum Fireball EX - This has the little cable connection 38pin?
3. A card in the PCI? slot with a connection for the 50pin? connection
4. Toshiba CD-Rom drive with the same 50pin? connection.
5. A zip drive that apparently attached to another card in the PCI slot -
only smaller.
6. Pentium II on the mother board with two little connection places for the
38pin? connection.

Now, I turned the thing on and went to a NT Server log-on screen. I then
brilliantly went to the scsi utility and formated the Fireball ST drive,
thinking that I definately didn't want that NT server info.
Then I got frustrated and unhooked everything, experimented with a few
different things to no avail. And now I am sitting in front of an open shell
with all the omponnents out and in front of me. Apparently, there are jumper
settings and SCSI ID's and whole bunch of other things I only barely
understand.

So, I just want to put it all back together, throw on XP, load up some music
programs and play. Can someone walk me through how to get there...or is it
like the old song "you can't get there from here"?
Help!

"You can't there from here"!

Honestly, just the hard drives you list would be a near 100% indicator that
XP will not run on that system. Those hard drives, when made were in range
from over 3gigs to 12 gigs of drive space. And if the drives are the
sammler, XP will barely fit onto it, after you load some other apps.

Uh, you can't get there from here. :)

Your best bet is to find a local computer repair shop and have them put it
back together for you. This will save you many hours, if not days of
frustration.

Your friend has done you no favours.. I have no idea how much you paid for
it, but anything would be too much..

It appears to have been cobbled together, and I don't doubt that you have no
manuals, literature, CD's or anything else that might get it to work..

I would suggest that you take it back to your friend and get a refund.. new
entry level computers are very cheap these days and come with all that you
need for a reasonable computing experience..

He didn't say he paid anything for it, just that "I got a computer from
a friend to work with."; sounds to me as if the friend just gave him the PC
to toy with, and use.
