MemorySticks no longer visible

Hi,

I have WinXP Pro SP2 all Microsoft updates installed, with following drives:

ST3160827AS C: Partition Basic NTFS Healthy (System)
ST3160827AS D: Partition Dynamic NTFS Healthy
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B E: DVD/CD-ROM
Maxtor 6 B200P0 USB F: Partition Basic NTFS Healthy (Active)

I have had this configuration for a quite awhile. One day I tried to
use memorystick but it didn't show up as a new drive as it used to do.

I tried two different memorysticks and Disk Management shows them:

SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB <NO LETTER> Partition Basic FAT Healthy
Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 USB <NO LETTER> Partition Basic FAT Healthy

I can assign drive letters to SanDisk and Kingston, but they still don't
show
up in Explorer.

I opened SanDisk from Disk Management, tried to copy a file and got the
following
message:
"The destination does not support long file names"

SanDisk contains previously copied files with long names and I can copy
from SanDisk with long file names to hard disk.

Then I tried to format Kingston:
"The operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not
enabled.
To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer."
Rebooting computer didn't help.

I have checked Kingston's DataTraveler FAQ, tried to Google but nothing that
I've
tried seems to solve this problem.

Timo,

I would look in device manager to see if those memory sticks showed up in
the "other devices" with teh yellow question mark. Then delete them out of
there. Make sure you installed any software needed for those memory sticks
then plug them in. You shouldn't need to do that in theory they should just
"work". Good Luck.

Memory sticks show up in Device Manager under "Disk drives" as
Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 USB Device and SanDisk Crizer Micro USB
Device. They also showed up in under "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
as USB Mass Storage Devices (DataTraveler 2.0 and Cruzer Micro). No
yellow question marks whatsoever. Looks to me that XP has no problem
detecting them. They just do not get any drive letter or show up in
Explorer.

Like you said, they should just "work" without installing any extra
drivers.

Hey, Timo-

I am having precisely the same problem you're having. The same device shows
up without fail in the Explorer on a Win2000 machine but in XP, nothing at
all. I took the same steps you did in contacting Kingston support and
likewise had no luck at all. Any ideas yet?

Thanks,
Bob

Hey Timo,

I know where to look for a solution.
I have to look it up but I will post it very soon.

Yes, that's correct. After googling and reading quite a many solutions
I realized that I did have a partially failed uninstallation of DAEMON
Tools before problems begin. I had to manually remove the rest.
"Crititcal" file was sptd.sys in C:\Windows\system32\drivers. After
removing that and rebooting, everything started to work including
memorysticks and digicameras.

And thanks to everyone who helped me!
