I know I've got 1gb (two 512mb) of memory in my desktop. Short of opening
the case, is there a way I can determine what kind of memory it is? I want
to make sure that it's DDR 400.

Consult your computer's or motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specifications.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the type of RAM installed:

SiSoft's Sandra

Belarc Advisor

Also, Crucial Memory's web site (www.crucial.com) has a database to
help to find the right RAM for your specific make and model computer
and/or motherboard.
