Memory sticks/extrenal hard drive

Connected new external hard disk drive (Samsung 60Gb) by USB but neither my
midi system nor lap-top recognise it - first reaction was that they know
something's there but say it won't work: now no reaction at all. Maybe
connected with problems with memory sticks of various makes - I can access
and edit previously stored data but nowadays all refusing to allow saving -
new ones work briefly.
Any clues please?

Your new device is probably looking for a drive that is already use by both
machines ie the D drive, change this drive to say a p drive or something and
reconnect your new device

Thanks, fortunately i didn't have to try this: I left the external disk
connected and thus powered -up for 2 hours, disconnected, re-connected, and
straightaway it was recognised. Pure luck, but anyway it works!
