Have I been sold rubbish. The website where I bought these

When you say "these", you should have made clear whether you are
talking about an individual memory module or the two-piece kit.

That's not a question, it's just pointing out that you might be
having trouble with the terminology.
(Microdirect.co.uk) reported them as 2G. I bought 2 of them 4G

If you bought two of them 4G, then you should have 8G.

Your terminology might need an upgrade.

You would need two of those kits to equal 4 GB of RAM. Or you need
one kit that says "4G" at the end of the part number. But, given
that you already have 2 GB, you would need only one more 2 GB part
number (a duplicate of the one you have). Then again, some
mainboards/motherboards have trouble functioning with four memory
modules.

Ok thanks guys. I thought I was getting myself 4G. Should have read
the small print VALUE as in a supermarket value baked beans (their own
brand). If I want to get 4G now could I get a diffrent manufacturer
maybe if the next 2 chips where 1G each and had a Cas Latency: 5 ?

and beware if you are using XP 32 bit only 3 or 3.25G will show up......

Great thanks for your help. Large memory only if 64 bit Op system. Boy
have I learnt somethings today.

Depending on the number of such slots on your motherboard you may have
to replace these two DIMMs if you want to increase memory. You could
discuss with Microdirect with a view to getting your money back. If
their ads are not clear they should welcome the feedback.... I know
Scan make it clear by saying something like 4GB (2x2GB) so there is no
question.

Not their fault. The fault was that you cannot read the product
description.

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/20684

It says right in the specs: "2 x 1GB". You said you installed "2 * ..."
which means you installed only 2 memory sticks, not 4 of them. You did
NOT buy 2 "of them". You bought ONE kit that had 2 memory sticks in it
that gave a TOTAL capacity of 2GB.

You did not buy rubbish. The product you bought probably works
perfectly as the 2GB kit that it is, and which you proved by noting that
your computer detected the 2GB that you installed. Problem wasn't on
their end. Instead it was PEBCAK.

Oh, you saw another post that provided the exhibit (URL to the web page)
for the online vendor's product description? Yeah, didn't think so.
Everyone just guessed. I showed what the OP saw at their site.

Before buying memory, run the crucial.com or crucial.com/uk memory
advisor. It tells you which configurations of memory a computer can
upgrade to and supplies a money-back guarantee if the memory is
incompatible (free shipping too). It is worth the extra $/£ for
quality memory.
