memory could not be read

I am using excel 97 SR2 with windows 2000 Pro, when I
opened one of my excel files gives me the following error:
The instruction at "Ox300f67f1" referenced memory
at "Oxfffffffc" the memory could not be read.

on debug gives the following:
Unhandled exception in EXCEL.EXE
0xC0000005: Access violation
300F67F1 mov ecx,dword ptr[eax-4]

Is anything I can do to fix or recover the files?

Very likely a corrupted file. Hope you have kept a backup. Otherwise
there is a lot of info on the web on how to attempt recovery
