memory and windows reactivation

I origianlly had 512 mb of memory, 2 pair of 256 corsair,
and I added another 512 of corsair and had to reactivate
windows because of a major hardware change. Will ths
happen each time I add memory or change the amount of it
in the future? Was just curious as to why you would
reactivate windows in the first place for something
simple as adding memory. Also, windows shows my memory
as 1.00 gb instead of a total of 1024 mb. Does windows
round the amount off or is it nothing to worry about?
Thought it would show it as 1024, but probably not a big
deal at all. Thanks

One DIMM addition will not cause activation but it's cumulative, so if this
was the nth hardware update you have done, with all the other previous
upgrades, you just hit the magic number.

Cari has given you what is probably the correct answer.

For details as to what hardware is monitored by activation and how the
need to reactivate is triggered see MVP Alex Nichols' article at

Good luck

Once you have changed an item in a category of hardware and hence lost
its 'vote' that things are the same, you will not lose that any more by
changing it again. Read up at www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I wonder if I should
make changes in memory usage as changing in which windows
uses memory for better performance in programs to better
performance in system cache and changing page file amount
in virtual memory. Read somewhere that helps improve
memory usage or there may be some utitilities that do
that. Just want to see if those changes improve the
choppy graphics I sometimes have in games. I gig of ram
and a 9700 pro is plenty, but read where there may be
some memory usage dealings in that regard. Thanks
