Memory access error

I downloaded some updates from the microsoft site for
Windows XP--and actually used the computer afterward.
Today, I get a message "memory access error in module
kernel32 at 4247:83155159" -- and "you may not have
appropriate permission to access" when I try to open
software such as Microsoft word.

Clue: Microsoft does not distribute updates or patches via e-mail. You
likely recently received and installed one of these faked support emails.
