mem upgrade - XP slows down hugely

After a memory upgrade (in the 1st slot was 256 mb, in the second added
512mb), the bios recognized immedieately the upgrade correcly, but to my
surprise win XP pro was very very very slow slow .
I then took out the original 256 mb in slot 1 and left the 512mb in its
second slot , and win XP runs normaly (recognizes 480 mb).
Both memroy sticks were "nobrand" same type PC 2700 same 333Mghz speed.
Why is windows XP so slow when the 2 were installed, and how to install it
again correctly ?.

Timing miss-match, or BIOS settings related to memory are not
compatible with your configuration. It's always best to place
the largest memory stick in the 1st slot.
