Medion Radeon 9600TX replacement fan problem

Hi there,

Recently my pc started crashing when playing games (Half life 2 etc).

After some investigation I found out that the fan on my graphics card (Medion
Radeon 9600TX) was no longer working.

So I need to replace the fan, I have been looking at the Arctic Cooler range,
but herein lies my problem.

I need to correctly identify my card to ensure I purchase the right model
cooler, I have just spent 30 minutes on the telephone to Medion technical
support only to be told that the card is definately an ATI Radeon 9600TX,
however ATI do not list this card only a Radeon 9600XT.

After some research it appears that the information given to me by Medion
Technical support is wrong and the card was actually manufactured by MSI for
Medion and are based on the Radeon 9500Pro.

However I can not find out if this was simply a rebadge of the Radeon 9500Pro
or if the card itself is built differently - without identifying exactly what
card this is, I can not purchase a suitable cooler.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do they solve it, or does
anyone know what card this really is?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

A little more information, this is what PC wizard tells me about my card:

General Information :
Model : Radeon 9600TX (R300)
Manufacturer : Hightech Information System Ltd (Medion??)
Bus Type : AGP
Manufacturer : ATI Technologies Inc.
Total Memory : 128 MB
Texture Memory : 242 MB
Processor : RADEON 9600 TX AGP (0x4E46)
Converter : Internal DAC(400MHz)
Refresh Rate (min/max) : 56/100 Hz

So I need to replace the fan, I

FFS it's simply not THAT difficult.

Just measure the spacing between the two fan mount lug holes and buy
an aftemarket fan which fits. The volume of airflow and noise (RPM)
you choose are up to you. However essentially any of the ball bearing
based aftermarket fans from ThermalTek, Vantec et al will do a more
than adequate job.

Thanks for your reply, I originally was looking to replace just the fan and
contacted the manufacture of it just to be told they only deal with trade
purchases.

After more research I was under the impression as the fan sat within the
heatsink - that it would be near impossible for me to get a suitable
replacement fan and going for an after market cooler would be the better
option.

However I will follow your suggest and see if a replacement fan (that will
sit in the heatsink) is a viable option.

Yer, look I didnt mean to sound as harsh as I probably did. But the
fan required simply isn't that specific.

Any ½ decent fan will fit the bill for that card.

The main thing is that you ensure the spacing of the mounting holes on
the fan line up with the mounting holes on the daughterboard. These
are fairly standard, but do come in a couple of sizes. 54mm from
memory for both of my ATI cards. Measure the ones on your existing fan
mount, and then you'll know. They usually spec the spacing on the
better brand aftermarket fan literature.

For instance I run an inexpensive ThermalTek Crystal Orb on an
overclocked 256MB 9550.

Though the literature specs it as an nvidia GeForce graphics card fan
and in truth it's overkill for cooling the ATI chipset, it fits the
9550 like it was made for it. 54mm (?) spaced holes are 54mm spaced
holes after all. :)

That's just one offering. It's a efficient fan with a superb heatsink
base, but noisy because of it's high RPM. Except that I got it gratis,
I would've bought something less noisy which'd still have been more
than adequate airflow wise for the 9550 chipset. This thing reminds me
of my high RPM CPU fans I used to run on my overclocked CPUs 6 years
ago! Effecient, but it sounds like you are working next to an airport!

;)

God luck.

PS: The various incarnations of the Vantec Icebergs are good for
purpose as well as inexpensive. Overkill is pointless. Quiet is good.
You can track them down here.

R300 is the GPU used on the 9700 and 9500 Pro cards. Looks like your
research was correct. This is a good thing because the 9500 Pro is faster
than anything in the 9600 family.
Manufacturer : Hightech Information System Ltd (Medion??)

So it's made by HIS. Ironically, many HIS cards use Arctic Cooling coolers
as standard equipment. :)

Three options:
1. Peel back the sticker on the original fan and add a few drops of motor
oil.
2. Unbolt the original fan and zip-tie an 80 mm case fan onto the card. :)
3. Either of these will do:

Fit most ATi cards from 9500 to 9800.
