Media Player - No Sound on DVD but Sound on CDs

I am working on a friend's Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop, which used to play
DVDs complete with soundtrack.

It runs under Windows XP (all latest updates and SPs) and Media Player is
Version 11.

It plays CDs OK but when a DVD is inserted you can see the pictures but
there is no sound.

I have updated and installed the latest SigmaTel High Definition Audio from
the Dell website but it makes no difference.

I have checked nothing is muted and that all volumes are up full.

I uninstalled the drivers of the DVD\CD drive and reinstalled them.

I am at a loss to know what to do so any help will be gratefully received.

You will need to reinstall your dvd player software. most likely you have
lost the codec for audio playback. if something like sonic, roxio or nero be
uninstalled it will usually take the codec with them
