Media Palyer Crash in Windows Vista

I recently bought a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and happily
installed one on my Core 2 Duo PC with 512 MB RAM. But also had a copy
of my previous OS that is Windows XP Home on my PC just incase things
didn't work out. Being a movie buff I have around 10-15 movies stored
on my hard drive and the story begins here...

Windows Vista's Media Player wont play those AVI files and after
downloading numerous codecs including Divx, Klite and numerous others
i am unable to play any of those files and the Media Player crashes
saying that the program needs to shut down or if I want to find a
solution online but without any result.

My 350$ suddenly seem to be going down the drain since I cant figure
out something to make my AVI files play on Windows Vista...and I don't
want to switch to any other player because all these years I have been
using MP and switching is not an option.

Any and all help would be highly appreciated, thanks!

You have been sabotaging it by downloading all those Codecs. This
downloading causes 1/2 of all WMP crashes (and video and audio drivers
account for most of the rest).

Perhaps uninstall all your codecs (and all the viruses that come with them).
