McAfee isn't picking up a pest!!!

Gary

Somewhere along the way I picked up a pest or virus that starts up MS
Internet Explorer and points me to a site that wants to do a virus
scan. It's a persistent little bugger. MSIE isn't even my browser of
choice...I use mostly Mozilla Firefox.

I have the full McAfee 2007 Internet Security Suite, which hasn't
picked up this pest and removed it despite NIGHTLY scans.

What's the best program out there that will keep annoyances off my
computer? I'm ready to rip out McAfee and install something that
works! I'm tired of spending money on programs that don't do as
advertised.

I have tried Kaspersky AV, but it kept asking me to make decisions
about things I didn't understand. If it's good, them I'm willing to
invest in the education necessary to properly use the product.

No anti-virus program is 100% reliable. Read
http://www.av-comparatives.org/. You see any listed at 100% coverage?
If you can't enforce safe surfing then perhaps you should look into
intrusion protection software (IPS) for zero-day pests. I know of Prevx
but its 1R (research) version isn't free anymore. However, no security
can overcome an ignorant user that deliberately installs software and
answers all prompts to bypass them, because security is supposed to
protect the user, not deter them from making their own choices on the
use of their own resources.

Did you check McAfee Viruscan to make sure that you are getting updates?
Maybe what you have is old.

Just a thought- it seems that few people who create virus and other such
problems for us ever get caught. Why is that? If some were punished
severely, I think this problem would lessen, somewhat anyways. Maybe a few
years of hard labor on a Georgia road crew might be convincing.

Or maybe the anti virus program makers like having those bums out there?

or maybe you haven't a clue...

there have been a number of convictions of virus writers in the past...
not a huge number, mind, you, but a number... the problem isn't that
nobody wants to catch them it's that it's hard to find them, hard to
figure out who they are, and hard to bring charges against them because
they often aren't in the same jurisdiction as the people trying to catch
them...

Geez, talk about not having a life that you would waste in on following
the trials and tribulations of a convicted malware author.

The "war on web terror" isn't going to won, until virus writers who are
caught doing this stuff, end up getting lengthly stays in the Federal
Prision system, or start losing fingers or hands, or face the firing squad
as a punishment.

Sounds like you've got some adware rather than a virus or trojan or worm or...
Which may be why McAfee isn't seeing it - it's not something McAfee's looking for.
Try Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (there's a free version if you fight your way past the links to the
paid version) and Safe Networking's SpyBot Search & Destroy

Yeah, right, let's get vigilante on them, like that's a responsible
attitude. So do you also want pickpockets who steal a different
resource of yours to also have their hands or fingers chopped off? You
must be a religious fanatic who dreams of the good old days when hands
were lopped off thieves. So when are you going to lop off your dick for
all those times you've masturbated and wasted seed? I suppose it takes
time for the child to grow out of the adult. So is your boss sharpening
his axe to lop off one of your protruberances because you've been
delving into the company supplies to give your kids their pens and pads
when school starts? Oh, forgot, you aren't old enough to have a job
except maybe to ask "Want fries with that?" They're thieves so they
should get punished to the same extent as any other thief stealing the
same amount of value.

You, because what people see is what you typed, not some inflection in
your voice as you heard it in your head. You do not have the knack for
sarcastic wit in writ; therefore, learn to use emoticons. ;->
