Maybe way OT, but need your help

Hi there,
we are hearing many adverts on radio and TV about protecting your PC with
firewalls and so on - TRUE.
I have just been on ZONE Alarm's site and read about FireWalls and so on. I
have NAV 2002 with latest virus definitions installed and my XP Pro's
firewall enabled. Does this replace NAV or is it totally different from
NAV?
I access the Internet through an ISDN Dialup. Would you suggest this
software for me? I don't want to buy it if I don't have to. (Our currency
is 8 x for one US Dollar, 400 bucks for me.)

Thanx for your help!

AV means Anti Virus - NOT the same as a firewall. The built-in XP
firewall is OK as far as it goes, but it doesn't block any outgoing
traffic. There are several free firewalls for personal use - Zone Alarm,
Outpost, and Kerio being three of them, all good AFAIK.

NAV and firewall are two different types of protection.
NAV is for viruses and firewall is more to prevent hacking
into your computer.

You should have a virus protection like Norton Antivirus
(NAV) and a firewall. The WinXP built-in firewall is ok
but is very basic. For ull protection a router (hardware
firewall) is the best and the Zone Alarm/Norton Firewall
(Software firewall) is the second best.

Hope this helps!

If you want to save some money and have good protection, I suggest the
free versions of two products. For a firewall, download the free version
of Zone Alarm. It's free for personal/home use. For virus protection,
download AVG 6.0 from www.grisoft.com. It's also free for home users.
Both programs provide frequent updates. I have used both for quite some
time now, and have had no troubles with worms or other pesky viruses.

Another action to take is to keep abreast of Microsoft critical updates.
The recent rash of problems with the Blaster worm was avoided by me and
many others who paid attention to that need.

Hope this helps.

Because I don't know anything about the settings and how to set up
ZoneAlarm manually, will I manage? (Busy downloading the free ZoneAlarm
now.)

Do I have to de-avtivate XP's firewall when I use ZoneAlarm?

Deon

Thanx again for your help.

If you JUST have Norton Anti Virus (NAV,) you don't have a firewall.
Norton has a product (actually a set of products, or a"suite") called
Norton Internet Security that has both the antivirus and a firewall,
among other bits.

Zonealarm is totally different.

Think of it this way. Norton Antivirus is a doctor. Zonealarm is a
cop. The cop can prevent someone from breaking into your house, but is
useless if you need your appendix taken out, or you get a cold.
Similarly, the doctor can help if you get sick, but can't do a heck of
a lot to find out who stole your TV.

Zonealarm, by the way, has both a free, personal edition and a "pro"
version. With the aggressiveness of this worm, and just the general
state of the Internet today, I'd say yes, get a firewall, even if you
had just plain old dialup connections.

Hope that helps. And your copy of XP is 32 bit. <g>

Thanx for the help.
And I was just wondering about this 32 bit thing - thanx. <g>

2nd question: I have all the critical updates installed, do I have to
install the patch from MS for this latest worm as well?

Thanx again!

I firewall tries to keep people from getting into your computer, while an
anti-virus program tries to keep viruses out. A firewall will block certain
ports (kinda like closing windows in your house to keep people from getting
in) while an anti-virus would play nurse/doctor (depending on what you dig)
and helps keep you from getting infected files. Hope this helps.

The patch is a critical update released last month, so as long as you
have them all, you should be fine.

Wait, doen't having Norton AV convert this 32 bit windows to 64? Oh, but
having a dial-up connection brings it right back to 32. I hope he doesn't
have a ps/2 mouse, otherwise he'd be running a 16 bit version.

I on the other hand, just got a flat panel so I'm running at 128 bits. Can't
wait til I get a sound card, then I'd be at 256.
