Maxtor Error Codes & Drive Scanning Times

Is there anywhwere I can find a list of Error codes and what they mean

Also How long do you think it should take to low level format an 80 GB 5400
540DX drive and also to scan it in Windows Xp startup for erros?

I'm looking at around 8 hours to low level format (FULL) and over 12 hours
to conduct a full scan (It's still running as I'm writing)

The drive was running fine and then all of a sudden it start make noises
last night like the thing was spinning fast and slow and skipping.

Anyone know how long Maxtor Warranty is these days?

Trashcan. It sounds like it is having read errors or something.

I low Level formatted the drive and retested it and it now appears to be
working fine

It passed the same tests as before without any problems.

Might do the Burn in test to see if it passes that but it appears OK after
the low level format.

I had the same thing Happen once with an IBM Drive - made similar noises and
had same problem so low level formatted it and it seemed to correct itself.

I've tested this drive twice Now - with windows XP - through Scan and the
using the floppy disk utility from Maxtor's website.

It's your data. When I get a drive that acts like that I replace it,
for under $100 it isn't worth taking the risk.

Yeah, why check out the powersupply when you can buy a new drive, right?

Not likely a power supply issue, they don't cause drive slowdowns, at
least I haven't seen such in the past eight years.

I believe that Maxtor has a 3 year warranty on this drive so will contact
them to get a replacement - but wondering if anyone know about where to egt
the codes list from - just interested to know what's wrong with it.

If you did actually succeed in doing a low level format the drive would be unusable.

I have a Seagate 13 gig drive that was getting read errors only in the top 3 gigs.
I shrunk the partition down to 10 gigs and have not had a problem since.

My 20 gig backup drive was sometimes giving "unable to write" errors.
It sounded like it was slowing down sometimes. I fixed it by squashing the power
plug pins to make better contact.

Nonsense. All drives come low-level formatted.
