Maxtor 1394 external hard drive startup/shutdown problems

I have a AMD 64 3200 system running XP Pro SP1. Whenever I try starting
without my Maxtor 1394 external hard drive connected windows hangs up on the
startup screen until I connect the hard drive. Same thing goes for shutdown.
I've tried stopping (which windows won't let me do) and uninstalling the
hard drive. How do I get around this?

Hi Kyle,

If Windows will not let you stop a device, it normally means that it
is in use by a program. I would get a program like Process Explorer
to see which running process is using a file on the external drive.
