Maximum length of Name reference values

Does anyone know the maximum length of the 'reference' value associate
with an Excel named item? In other words, on the 'Insert->Name->Defin
dialog, if I set the "Name in workbook" field to be 'LITERAL', what'
the maximum number of characters that the 'Refers To:' field ca
contain? I'm sure it's a fixed limit - I doubt I can set the variabl
'FREEDOM' to reference the text of the Declaration of Independence'
but I can't find any documentation on either the max length, or an
super-secret tips or tricks (pronounced 'registry entries' fo
extending it

As always, thanks in advance,

- Ro

Hi
a short test results in a maximum length of 255 characters (including
the equation sign). Don't think there's any registry setting to change
this :)
There isn't any to extend the row limit <vbg>

There's an old work-around to this limit.

The use of multiple names combined into a single name may extend the length
into maybe the Declaration of Independence, or at least the Gettysburg
Address.
