Max number of connections

We have a 7 computer Peer to peer network. Recently, the computer that we
using for shared files denies access and gives the Error message: "No more
connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there
are already as many connections as the computer can accept."

Is there a way to increase the number of allowed connections? Is there
another way to solve this problem?

Eric,

I had this same problem with a couple of clients. If you have Windows 98 on
the network they are probably grabbing more than one connection to the main
machine. I know Microsoft states that they count multiple connections from
one machine as 1, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Windows 98. My
guess is 95 would have the same problem. Both clients solved the problem by
upgrading the workstations to XP.

NOTE... The suggestion from Pegasus (MVP) probably won't help you either.

You could try to split your files among multiple
computers. If that doesn't work, it might be time for an
upgrade to a client/server setup. W2K Server can be had
on ebay pretty cheaply.

Hi Pegasus, i've read the article but i can't find the tuning inside
control panel -> network as mentioned. My machine is XP home. Which
version got that function ?

What exactly is it that you cannot find? Which paragraph are you
referring to? Please be specific!

In the article, it mentioned that if we were to modify the registry
then the service settings in control panel cannot be used. So where is
this settings in control panel to set how long the disconnected time ?

Daniel

In my previous reply I asked "Which paragraph are you
referring to? Please be specific!". You replied "In the article,
it mentioned that if we were to modify the registry . . .".
This is a vague statement that means nothing to me.

I don't really have the time to look up the KB article in question
and to plow through the details until I find what you might be
thinking of. Remember - newsgroups are a service provided
by volunteer contributors. They are giving some of their time
freely and without any compensation. Unless you makel an
effort and state exactly and in detail what your problem is,
I will cease responding to this thread.

The 5th paragraph reads:
====================
The maximum number of other computers that are permitted to simultaneously
connect over the network to Windows NT Workstation 3.5, 3.51, 4.0, and
Windows 2000 Professional is ten. This limit includes all transports and
resource sharing protocols combined. This limit is the number of
simultaneous sessions from other computers the system is permitted to host.
This limit does not apply to the use of administrative tools that attach to
the system from a remote computer.
====================
This is a hard-coded limit. To get around it, you must install
a Windows Server product plus the required number of CALs
(Client Access Licence).

No actually understand what you mean by install a Windows server product.
