Cought this as I was showing of my math skills to my 11 year old son, he
wasn't impressed.

Classical math wonder gets wrong in excel!
why is that?

1*1=1 correct
11*11=121 correct
111*111=12321 correct
1111*1111=1234321 correct
11111*11111=123454321 correct
111111*111111=12345654321 correct
1111111*1111111=1234567654321 correct
11111111*11111111=123456787654321 correct
111111111*111111111=12345678987654300 incorrect

the last calculus should of course generate =12345678987654321
Cell 1 "number a", Cell 2 "number b", Cell 3 "=C1*C2"<

is it just mine excel xp standard or....?

That is because Excel arithmetic abilities only extend to 15 digits. To
perform your last calculation accurately, use Windows Calculator.

Found teh same error, again accidentally while having fun.
But, same error was thrown by Open Office CALC too....

The excuse as Excel's arrithmatic ability extends only to 15 digits is
unacceptable.
