Marking deleted items as read

Is there a way to automatically mark the item as read when I delete an
unread message?

Why would you want to? If it is going to the trash (deleted items IS trash)
then what difference does it make?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Swifty asked:

Does the answer to my original question depend on the answer to this one?

I never delete any mail permanently - I let it fester in the trash until it
gets removed automatically. Many items of mail that arrive are obvious
spam, so I delete them. I'd rather NOT have the unread items highlighting
on the trash folder, because anything highlighted indicates mail that needs
handling. This stuff has already been handled.

May I have my answer now, please... ? :)

Not really but it depends on what version of Outlook you are using, which
you neglected to include in your first post. Rules get more granular as you
move ahead in Outlook versions.

For instance, in Outlook 2003, you can use the rule "after arriving - with
specific words, blah blah blah-delete it-mark it as read"

Silly me. Outlook 2003.

I don't think rules can tackle this. The mail has already been processed
by a battery of rules, and what I'm left with is moved into the "Probably
Spam" folder for my attention. I go to that folder because it has unread
items. Many of these are obviously spam, so I just want to delete them and
mark them read so they go straight to the "Deleted Items" folder, and cease
attracting my attention.
So, there is no mail arriving or sending to trigger the rules, unless there
is an extra condition that I haven't found: "When a new item appears in
folder xxxx".
