Many programs under Windows XP not running

Folks,

I'm getting several errors:

Word (and Wordpad) blow up within 1 minute of startup. "Microsoft Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close."

Norton Ghost no longer lets me copy my C: drive to my D: drive. Says
something like "Norton Ghost can not run while Windows is running."

I'm tempted to reinstall Windows XP, but I've got better things to do today.

Any ideas?
