Many bitmaps as "pictures," "Paste Special"/Paint, ?

Hi! I've got a load of bitmap files which I want to put into my Word
document, as "pictures," so they will--Word says-- print better on a high
quality printer.
--->Please, how can I get the set of pictures--as pictures--into a Word
document globally or at least efficiently?

The only way I found so far is to "paste special." The problem is, the only
way I've found to "paste special" is cumbersome: in order to copy the image
in a format that can paste as a "picture," I open each picture, one at a
time, for editing using Paint, to select it.

(With XP I'm using Word 2002; will upgrade to to '03 when I get a
chance--unless someone tells me I really don't need '03.)

Many thanks for any advice you might offer!

I thought I'd found a way to paste multiple special images, but it doesn't
quite work. What I found is that I can drag & drop bitmap files, which then
appear in Word in some format other than "Picture": then I can cut the
images, and re-paste them as "pictures." However, when I tested this method
on five files in a batch, only two of them re-pasted. I don't know why.
