Manually receiving faxes and which fax program to use

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 w/Windows XP SP2. I have 2 questions regarding
faxing. I just successfully sent a fax for the first time.

1. Should I be using fax console from Windows. Or, should I use Phone
Tools, a disc that came with my computer?

2. My fax line is shared with my home phone. I have not tried to receive a
fax yet. Although I have set the default to manual to receive a fax, I have
read the help section and cannot determine how to receive a fax if I answer
the phone and hear the tone for the fax. I'm very new at this so basic
instructions would be appreciated (do I open the program, click receive fax,
answer the phone and hear the tone and then hang up the phone?)

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Windows XP Fax and Phone Tools are 2 completely different programs. Only the
former is supported in this group, and I doubt anyone is familiar enough
with both of them to help you make a choice between them. Only you can
figure out which suits your needs better.
Once you answer an incoming call you cannot then route it to Windows XP Fax.
Moreover, Windows XP does not support Distinctive Ring. Therefore, Windows
XP Fax will answer every incoming call it receives if you set it to
automatic receive. The only alternative for what you want to do is to
install an external switching device to your phone line.

Thanks Russ. I currently have the receive status set to manual so the fax
feature will not answer all of my phone calls. If I know a fax is coming and
my phone is ringing, do you think if I open the program, go to "file/receive
a fax now", it would answer the incoming fax and work? Thanks for your input.

Thanks Russ. I do have the program set for manual incoming. If I know I am
going to receive a fax, my phone is ringing, I then open the program and go
to "file/receive incoming fax now", do you think that would work? Any help
appreciated. Thanks.

All you need to do is leave the Fax Monitor running. See the "Answer Now"
button?

I do not have an "answer now" button. However, under file, there is an
option to "receive a fax now." I am wondering if I am expecting a fax and my
phone is ringing, if I select that, if the program will then answer the call
and presto, I will get a fax. Thanks again.

Unless you have misstated the program you are using, you most certainly do
have an Answer Now button. You have a Fax monitor under Tools. It has the
Answer Now button.

Gotcha. Yes, under tools/fax monitor/I see the Answer now option. Thanks so
much Russ. I appreciate your efforts!
