Manual vs. automatic IP address

Hi,
I have a home network made up of 3 computers behind my ADSL router. It has a
DHCP configuration so that IP addresses are allocated automatically. Then
I've set up port forwarding so that I can access my laptop from the Internet
using Remote Desktop. The problem is that my laptop's IP address is not
constant and changes every now and then. The router (Linksys) doesn't allow
forwarding to network names (eg. "David") only IP addresses. Can this be
solved without disabling DHCP and using manual IP addresses?

If I have to use manual addresses there is the problem that I have to
manually change the tcp/ip configuration every time I bring my laptop to
another networks. Is there a way to change the configuration using a script?

regards
David

See if the router has the option to either create reservations for DHCP leases
[doubtful] or can change the lease period. If you can at least change the lease
period, you may be able to change it to permanent which while may not be advisable on
a lan with a larger amount of computers should work fine on a network of three
computers that has around 250 leases available, and of course you could always
reconfigure it if needs change. Another option would be to configure the other two
computers with static IP addresses and allow the DHCP to issue only one address that
you define to insure you always get the same address. --- Steve

You could use dynamic DNS (some ADSL routers even support this natively)

Get an account at e.g. http://www.dyndns.org/ and install a service on the
laptop that updates the registered IP address each time. Then, remotely you
can refer to your laptop by name
