Managing user rights

S

Steven

My XP system is setup with myself as the Administrator
and other users with Limited Access rights. However,
when I install programs, the other users are not able to
use them. They receive an error message saying they need
more rights, or something like that. I want to allow
some users access to some programs, and not allow some to
others. I've already tried (as the administrator) going
to the folder where the application is installed and
right clicking on the folder, select "Sharing & Security"
and adding the users on my system who will use this
program. But its not working.

What must I do to enable access to the programs I
installed as the administrator?

Thanks

Many programs simply will not run on a limited user account. In addition to
granting the rights to the program's installation folder, write access to
Windows and its subfolders may be required as well. And last but not least,
are the HKCR and HKLM branches of the Registry, much of which the limited
user will have Read access, but not write.

Your explanation dovetails with Steven's experience. How do
you suggest to work-around this situation to accomplish what
he wants to accomplish?

About all you can do is adjust the relavant permissions in the file system
and the Registry. In REGEDIT you can right click a branch or subkey and
select Permissions, and assign user rights there.
