Manage Ports

Could somebody tell me,
a. how to close ports in w2k in services?
b. how to make sure that I want to open
some ports that only serv some services?

eg,
I only want to open ports number,
21, 22, 23, 25, 53, 67, 68, 80, 110,
113, 139, 143, 443.
And I do not want another ports opened
by system automatically.

Is there anything I can do with the files in:
c:\%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc ?

TIA !

1) 2K's native IP filtering (not very good)
2) IPSec policies (round-about)
3) A firewall (best option)--there are tons available, so see Google.

If you want to control ports based on requesting services, a good host
firewall is probably your best option.

No, that has nothing to do with IP filtering. It's a just a list.

To close ports go,

Right mouse, my network places > properties > local area
connection > properties > Tcp/Ip properties > advanced >
options > Tcp/Ip filtering.

hope this helps.

The only problem with this suggestion is that you can only say which ports
you want open. You can completely isolate your system with IP Filtering.
