Malware Removers

I stumbled on this page which lists 18 freeware programs, only two of which
(A-squared and Advanced Searchbar) are known to me. Does anyone use any of
these programs, or have any comments about them? I cannot recall them being
mentioned previously in ACF.

Hmmmm. I've never seen most of them. Darned if I'd try any of them out.
Never heard of the site either.

Same here. And some of 'em just don't sound right.

My rule of thumb is that I don't try anything that doesn't come from a
source that I find credible, be it a recommendation from one of the
trusted posters here (or elsewhere) or from a site I'm familiar with and
trust. I've been interested in and follow freeware anti-parasite
applications for some time -- if I haven't even *heard* of it, it's
probably for a reason.

I always make sure that they're not on this list.

Hi Frank - Well, one's naturally suspicious of such things, but I can make a
couple of comments. First, none of them appear on Eric Howes'
Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites list, here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#products Secondly,
while I don't have time right now to check out all of them, one at least, is
known to me in addition to the ones you mention. RegAuditor is one of a
number of utilities available as part of a $ package, nsauditor, and which
are also available free as separate downloads. I've used a number of these
(mostly network security stuff) including RegAuditor. They're clean and
simple, doing a relatively small, useful function in each case (WhoIs, a
couple of DNS functions, port scanner, Finger, BHO Scanner, etc.) One
caution with RegAuditor - as with most anti-malware programs, it is subject
to finding false positives, so look carefully at what it finds before you do
any cleaning. For example, I just re-ran it prior to this posting to
refresh my memory, and it identified a .dll - ctor, which is a part of the
Install Shield engine - as a potential 'hotbar' infestation.

I'm inclined to agree, but I thought the site worth a mention in case anyone
had tried any of the programs. One thing I found amusing was the fact that
the page is headed "Malware". A case, perhaps, of honesty being the best
policy!!!
