Malfunction of "Hide when active" in Notation area

I use XP Pro OEM
I find that Customised Notifications as become corrupted
I select the Hide when Inactive box, in the Taskbar dialogue panel and
select Customise, whereas the icons are listed OK. I find that the status is
fixed when selecting the down triangle to see the alternatives: Hide when
inactive, Always hide, Always show; only one line item from the 3 is
presented and the existing status cannot be changed.
This behaviour is new, but I have never been able to "Hide" the crossed LAN
icon, which is of no interest as I use a USB connected external broadband
modem
I should be grateful for any suggestions

Regretfully, I followed the instrustions [paid $5.00] and it has had no effect at all the problem is exactly as it was
