Making the Ad Hoc Wireless Connection

I am attempting to set up an Ad hoc wireless connection
between a laptop and PC, both running XP home edition.
I've followed Barb Bowman's instructions, but to no avail.
The wireless cards can 'see' each other, as I get s signal
strenth of 'strong' on both computers. When I try and
configure the laptop, I can select the new network (the
SSID setup on the first computer). Cannot ping either PC
from the other.
Any hints and tips? On the laptop there are two other
network connections (modem and Ethernet card), but they
are disabled.

is ICF running on these machines on these NICs?
If yes, turn ICF off.
