Making it Legal

The person who lives above me knocks on my door. He has Windows XP Pro
and its a pirated version. Ugh. Figures. He had a "friend" build it
in college and blah blah I wasn't listening. I just want to fix it so
he'll leave me alone.
I have a spare copy of WIndows XP Pro here, I would like to let him
have it and I'll charge him 20% above what I paid for it.
My question is, how can I go about making his currently installed
illegal version of XP Pro legal? I don't want to reformat.

Do a repair install.

As long as you have a genuine "Full Version" of
Windows XP Professional, you can perform a
"Repair Install".

Yes. In Careyspeak, a "full version" is one that is not an upgrade
version or a branded OEM.

Licensing is a touchy subject here :)

What about an OEM SP2 version?

As long as it's never been installed on any other computer, it'll work.

Well, yes. Duh. That makes perfect sense.

Or those whole claim to be responsible for keeping hundreds of Windozes
boxes running and never experiencing a problem with any of them.

Well, there are the occasional hardware failures and user-induced
problems, but otherwise, it's quite easy for a knowledgeable technician
to have hundreds of workstations running problem-free. Rather than
throw out insults, why don't you try to learn to maintain a computer?
(Granted, having actual knowledge of the OS would take some of the fun
out of your trolling.)
