Major Win XP Pro problem please help

Last night I was searching for some information on the internet for my son
and all of a sudden popups started coming. I eventually had to shut the
machine down. Now everything I try to execute I receive an error message
saying "application failed to initialize properly 0xc0000005".

I have no idea what to do now or how to fix it.
