Maintenance Update to Win XP Home E with SP2

I received a message to updatge windows before shutting down my computer.
And to not shut it down, but let the update program shut it down. It started
to update "1 of 3" updates, but will not finish. I shut the computer down,
reboot and can use the computer, but when trying to shut down, I now get the
message that windows is being updated ( 1 of 3) but it never finishes.

My problem is identical. I recently downloaded SP2. When I shut down, I get
this message: "Updates are being installed (1 of 3). Do not turn off or
unplug your computer. It will turn off automatically." Eight hours later I
unplugged, then restarted. All appeared well, and I shut down immediately
with no problem. That was this morning. I've been on the PC for about an hour
tonight, and when I shut down I got the same message twice. And here I am.
Looking for help.

I am also having the same problem (as are a number of my friends). Having
manually shut down my computer after the first attempt, I tried to run
Windows update manually... the website identifies that I haven't installed
the new components, and then "failed" when I tried to manually install them.
Is someone at Microsoft working on this or what? Does anyone have any other
ideas?
