Maintenance programs

Hi, I'm running XP pro and have no problems with it but recently I've been
running a third party maintenance program daily. It's finding "problems" and
deleting them automatically. Has anyone got any opinions on this type of
program? Thanks.

Which program is it? In any event, you don't need these programs, and they
often cause more problems than they purport to solve. Everything you need to
monitor, optimize, and maintain XP is already included as part of the OS.
You can manage just about everything from a single program called
(appropriately enough) Computer Management. You can monitor performance
using either Task Manager or System Monitor.

It's called TuneUp 2006 1-Click maintenance. What you said propably confirms
my own feelings, I just wondered what other people thought.

Really, 95% or more of performance and optimization comes down to having a
powerful processor and lots of RAM. And most of the remaining 5% involves
monitoring potential problems with Event Viewer, regularly defragmenting your
hard drives, and making sure you have plenty of physical memory for the
programs that you are currently running. The last item is where Task Manager
comes in real handy. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Although I don't know this one in particular, I never trust programs like
these, and think they are more likely to create problems than to solve them.
I wouldn't use it.

You are better off without programs that purport to to do this.

You can maintain optimum performance of ur system simply by being very
regular with stuff such as spyware adn virus scans, HDD care, which
includes disk cleanup, disk error checking, defragmenting etc at
regular intervals. Have enough memory to support ur applications and
ensure the system doesnt get loaded with unwanted stuff.

Sounds too scary for me to even try on a test box.
