Mailto corrupted

D

Dek0660

I hope someone can help with this. I am running XP along with Outlook 2003.
A problem recently started: when I click on an email link in Internet
Explorer, rather than a new message popping up the system hangs for about a
minute or so, and then new IE windows (over 50 of them) open. I believe they
are trying to access a link rather than have the new message open up. I
recall something about the Mailto protocol in the registry, so I searched for
it. One of the many Mailto instances in the registry does not let me open it
- it tells me it is corrupted.

I believe that is the heart of my problem. How can I go about fixing this
without losing everything on the PC?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice.

Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other.
Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail,
Contacts, and Calendar check box.

The "Set Program Access and Defaults" app might be used to toggle the
default mail to OE, then you can use the above to bring it back to Outlook,
replacing the Mailto: protocol in the process.

Mark,

Thank you for the response. Right now, my default programs already were set
to Outlook ... would that alter your suggestion?

Also, what is the "Set Program Access and Defaults" app?

Thanks.

"Set Program Access and Defaults" is an app listed on the Start/All Programs
menu (at the top). The drop arrow shows you your settings.

There are several ways to switch the default from Outlook to Outlook
Express, and back again. The help files of each app will show you how.

You may be having trouble with thumbnails. You might try turning off that
feature, and testing. I will list both the turn off and turn on commands
below.

OFF - go to Start, Run, and type:
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

ON - go to Start, Run, and type:
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Maybe the regsvr32 command here will repair that entry.

I followed the instructions in the linked document. I was unable to access
the mailto branch - the error was "Cannot open mailto: Error while opening
key". So I followed the next step to take ownership of the key and sub-keys,
but I could not accomplish this, getting the message "Unable to set new owner
on mailto. Access is denied."

Under the Owner tab in the advanced portion of permissions, besides my user
account is the administrator account. There are no others listed.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

How do I specify this command - I tried regsvr32 and was prompted for several
parameters.

Hi Dek0660,

Try this tool.

[DefaultMail] Set the default email client on a per-user basis:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultmail.htm

This should circumvent the mailto issue.

Click Start, Run and type (or copy paste) this line into the "Run:" pane:

regsvr32 sendmail.dll

Press the Enter key or click OK. Make sure you have a space between
"regsvr32" and "sendmail.dll" just like above.

Then type the other lines (or copy paste) pressing Enter after each line
is entered.

Ramesh,

IT WORKED!

I ran the install last night, but finally got around to rebooting and
testing just now. I went into the registry, and the Mailto protocol
continues to give me the error when I attempt to access it, but regardless
your fix allows me to use email links in I.E. I'd love to understand what is
fundamentally wrong with the registry, and if you or anyone else can shed
light on this I would be very interested to read the responses.

Thank you for your help with this problem, as well as thanks to both Mark
and Elmo who also were kind enough to read about my issue and post potential
solutions.

This is a great resource that I hopefully never again need - although I'm
certain I will be back when I mess something else up.

Happy Holidays, everyone.

Dek0660,

Glad that helped!

For the registry permissions issue, login as Administrator and grant Full Control to your user account for the mailto branch.
