Mail Set-up

Hello,
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP2, IE7, using Live Messenger
and also have Live Mail installed but not working totally correct
although Live Mail seems to be ok.

The issue is as follows:

When clicking Start>Control Panel>Other Control Panel
Options>Mail>Mail Setup-Outlook
It gives the following:
Email accounts
Data files
Profiles

When I check on email accounts it gives this:

Email

Add new account (checked)
View or change existing accounts

I clicked next and it gave me another screen listing which type of
server
my email account will work with.

Microsoft exchange server
Pop3
Imap
http
additional server types

I selected http because it said : Connect to http e-mail server such
as
Hotmail to download e-mail and synchronize mailbox folders.

I then clicked next

It gave me an error message that says: This feature requires the
outlook express
Component of Microsoft internet explorer version 5.0 or newer. Would
you like to download a newer vesion of Internet explorer now?

I have IE7, nevertheless I tried this and it came back with no
updates
found.

I then went back and selected view or change existing email accounts
and clicked next

It had my old isp provider email account there which I haven't used
in
over 3 years
so I deleted it, and now only shows the Add button highlighted, all
others are grayed out. When I clicked Add, it takes me to the screen
to select server type again:

Microsoft exchange server
Pop3
Imap
http
additional server types

I selected http once again and clicked next and it gave me the same
error as before.

I then backed out to the beginning and checked under data files:
It had one entry named Personal Folders, I opened it and it showed an
icon which said:
Outlook.pst office data file - when I clicked the icon to open it to
see what it was it said:

These files are used by the operating system and by various programs.
Editing or modifying them could damage your system. So I closed it.

I then backed out to the beginning again and under Profile clicked
Show Profiles

It opened a General screen and says the following profiles are set up
on this computer:
below that it has Outlook highlighted in blue and below that it has
Add, Remove, Properties, Copy, and below that it has

Prompt for a profile to be use
Always use this profile (checked)

then below this is a window with a drop down arrow but the only
selection available is
Outlook. If I click on prompt for a profile to be used then this area
becomes grayed out.

I'm trying to set up Hotmail in my Mail Set-up program under 'Other
Control Panel Options' I have Hotmail already set up in Windows Live
Messenger. The only reason I posted this was because I saw my old
ISP Email sitting in Mail Setup when it shouldn't have been there
because
I haven't used it in over 3 years and thought that it might be
conflicting with
my Hotmail and causing some of the issues I've been having.

Thank
you,

Robert

Hello,

The issue is as follows:

When clicking Start>Control Panel>Other Control Panel

It gives the following:
Email accounts
Data files
Profiles

My only options down that tree are:

NVIDIa Control Panel
Program Updates

No "Mail" option there. So, what is "Live Mail"? MSFT currently has the
following:

Windows Live Mail (a destkop client; formerly the Hotmail service)
Winodws Live Hotmail (the online web email service, formerly known as "Live
Mail", and, before that, "MSN Hotmail").

Thank you, Microsoft, for continuing your practice of confusing nomenclature
for your products and services. This complicates support response to no end.

Although your description of your menu tree suggests that you have the MS
Office component, Outlook, installed. It would help to know which version of
MS Outlook, as well a to clarify your "Live Mail" comment.

I am going to assume that:

You have MS Outlook (Version ????) installed.
You don't have Windows Live Mail installed.
You are trying to set up a Windows Live Hotmail account.

If I have that right, I believe you need something called "Outlook
Connector". Because I am not using MS Outlook, I have know idea where to get
it, or how to set it up. It looks like you can it from Microsoft for Outlook
2003, and Outlook 2007 free, here:

I don't know about earlier version...

I don't seem to have Outlook installed, I checked installed programs
under SIW and it doesn't list it however I do have a Micorsoft Outlook
icon on my desktop. When I try and open it I get this message:

Cannot start Microsoft Outllook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook
Express 4.01 greater. You can install Outlook Express by running
IE5Setup.exe from the IE5 folder located on your CD or through the
Windows Update website.

I have tried going to the Windows Update website but it came back with
no updates found. Additionally, I'm using IE7 and the CD I have is pre
SP2 although this may still work but I haven't tried it as yet. I do
have Live Mail installed but I don't use it as it doesn't have my
contacts and I prefer using Live Messenger instead (yes, thank you
Microsoft for confusing everyone and making things more difficult than
they already are) I already have a Hotmail account which I use through
Live Messenger and if need be through Live Mail. All I'm trying to do
is correct my Outlook if it needs correcting and the only reason I say
this was because I found my old email account that I used 3 years ago
sitting there on Mail Set up. Hence I assume Hotmail should be used
instead. I could of course be totally wrong and that this has nothing
whatsoever to do with Hotmail and is just where the other account had
to go to function.

Thanks

Robert

I don't seem to have Outlook installed, I checked installed programs
under SIW and it doesn't list it however I do have a Micorsoft Outlook

I don't use MS Outlook; uninstalled the whole evaluation Office suite from
my computer.
When I try and open it I get this message:

Cannot start Microsoft Outllook. Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook
Express 4.01 greater. You can install Outlook Express by running
IE5Setup.exe from the IE5 folder located on your CD or through the

That doesn't seem right. MS Outlook Express is a wholly different
application than MS Outlook, and I am not aware of any dependencies, other
than that Outlook will invoke Outlook Express as the news reader if Outlook
Express is set as the default news reader. I am told that OL will invoke
which ever news reader is set as default, which would mean Mozilla
Thunderbird if that were the default news reader.

Something is weird beyond my comprehension.
I have tried going to the Windows Update website but it came back with
no updates found. Additionally, I'm using IE7 and the CD I have is pre
SP2 although this may still work but I haven't tried it as yet.

I believe Windows XP only shipped with IE6, and MS Outlook Express 6 is a
component of IE6. In my case, updating to MSIE7 did not remove MS Outlook
Express 6; I just do not have it configured as the default, for either
email, or news.
I do have Live Mail installed...

Pay close attention to the name; it is, "Windows Live Mail", not "Live
Mail".
...but I don't use it as it doesn't have my contacts and I prefer using
Live Messenger instead (yes, thank you Microsoft for confusing everyone
and making things more difficult than they already are)...

And it is, "Windows Live Messenger". That is an IM client. Interesting. I
had never tried to access my Hotmail account from within Windows Live
Messenger. I just tried it, and it fired up Windows Live Mail. Yes, the
desktop client. I was expecting the web browser.
I already have a Hotmail account which I use through Live Messenger and
if need be through Live Mail. All I'm trying to do is correct my Outlook
if it needs correcting and the only reason I say this was because I found
my old email account that I used 3 years ago sitting there on Mail Set up.
Hence I assume Hotmail should be used instead. I could of course be totally
wrong and that this has nothing whatsoever to do with Hotmail and is just
where the other account had to go to function.

I am really lost, now. Do you, or have you ever had, MS Office installed?
Did you pay for the Office suite (or did it come, as an evaluation copy,
with your compuer), or MS Outlook (which can be purchased as a stand alone
email client, in a retail box)? If not, then you never had MS Outlook
Installed. If you had, as I did, an evaluation copy of MS Office bundled in
the OEM package with the computer, and you properly uninstalled it through
"Add/Remove Programs", it should be completely gone.

OTOH, if you had MS Outlook Express from the beginning, and installed
Windows Live Mail after the fact, then WLM took over as the default mail
handler, and disconnected MSOE without removing it.

So. What happens if you go to "Start | Set Program Access and Defaults"? I
need Administrative Privilege" to check it here. But you should be able to
get MSOE back through that control. I think. I had to re-add the shortcut to
MSOE after installing WLM. The location, on my default install, is:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
