Mail merge returns 0 (zero)

I cannot figure out why mail merge insists on returning a zero for a
particular field.

I'm using the mail merge wizard accessing an excel spreadsheet.

It'll pick up all the fields around it, but no matter how I format the excel
cells, word continues to return a 0.

Another thing that you may have to try is to select Options from the Tools
menu in Word and then go to the General tab and check the box against
Confirm conversions at open. Then when you attach the data source to the
mail merge main document, select the DDE option in the dialog box that
appears.
