Mail Merge locks up

I attempted Mail merge with Access. The first time, using the entire data
base, it crashed. I tried it using about 15 names at a time, that worked a
few times then it locked up again. I copied the data to Excel and tried mail
merge using Excel. That worked once, then again locked up. Is there any
fix? It's apparently Word that has the problem.

Which version of Word is involved? Do you get any error message with the crash
(if yes, what is the exact wording)?
