I just upgraded my machine to XP Pro, worked great for a couple of weeks then
the machine died. I when to install my copy of XP Pro on the new machine and
it would not let me install... Told me the copy was already in use... Well
almost true but that machine is now a boat anchor...

How do I do the install on the new machine? I know that this is legal since
the other machine is dead..

If you bought an OEM upgrade, then no, it's not legal.

You may need to phone the Activation Centre and have them reset the
activation for you. So when you try to activate and are told that the
Activation Centre can not be reached choose the option to Activate by phone.
Enter your region and then phone the number displayed. You will typically
have an automated message that will lead you through the process. It
typically takes about 5 minutes.

You can not get an OEM upgrade of xp. The manufacture must send you
an oem upgrade or be included with the purchase of a computer. This
is what MS told me.

I didn't think Microsoft made Xp oem upgrades at all. I thought the
last oem upgrade disk was Windowsme.

Anyway the original post does not make any sense. I never heard
anything not installing. Not activate yes but not install.

If the activation is a problem. He need to deactive and choose the
phone option. Especially if he has a retail version.

Pay attention to the error your getting. There is NO WAY the XP installation
can tell the key your using was installed on another machine, activation may
be a problem, but not installation.
It's likely that it's asking you to provide proof of upgrade eligibility by
inserting your previous windows version CD.
