Lynksys Router Constalty Disconnects

My house has a Lynksys BEFSR81, 8 port, router. We have
cable internet through RoadRunner. The cable comes into my
room, connects to the modem which then connects to the
router and then myself and my 5 other roommates connect to
the router. Prior to the router being installed there was
rarely any disconnects. Now AIM cannot stay connected for
more than 2 minutes on anyone's computer and online games
lag quite a bit. I have tried almost everything I can think
of or find on the internet. I have powered down the router,
modem and computer and turned them back on as many suggest.
I have called Lynksys tech support which was worthless and
suggest I set up "port triggering" for the game, which did
nothing. I have attempted to MAC address clone, but when I
put the physical address into the WAN MAC address I
couldn't even connect to the internet anymore. I'm sure it
doesn't help that most of my roommates are clowns and
cannot remember to turn off file sharing software when not
in use. Is there anyone I can take control as network admin
and limit their bandwidth usage? I'm desperate here, any
suggestions?

Check your cables, especially the one that goes from the router WAN to the
modem. Could be defective.
