lsass.exe - unable to locate component

when trying to start i get the following dialog box;

(header lsass.exe - unable to locate component
"This application has failed to start because DNSAPI.dll
was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the
problem."

clicking "OK" (the only option) gives only a black screen.

I have tried rebooting from the XP CD, and the only option
setup gives me is the option to install a clean version,
which I have done, but then I cannot access any of the
files that were in the "Documents and Settings" folder on
the old installation. Windows reports "Access is denied"
if I try to open the folder.

Any ideas?

log in as adminstrator account. If your files are there change the owner to
your current login name (even if it is the same as before). Should work.
