Low Virtual memory

I know this comes up a lot, so apologies and feel free to
roll your eyes.

A few days ago my PC started running slow and giving me low
virtual memory messages. I'm only using screenwriting
software - no games programmes. I've tried increasing the
paging file size and also tried to do a system restore but
there wasn't a restore point older than 3 days. I've also
disk cleaned and defragged.

My PC has 512 mb RAM. The hard drive is almost empty. I've
never had any problems with it until now. I read this
article: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm and think maybe
the page file has become corrupt as a result of a bad
shutdown (my PC sometimes hangs at shutdown). His proposed
solution is this: "In the Virtual Memory setting, set to
"No page file," then exit System Properties, shut down the
machine, and reboot. Delege PAGFILE.SYS, set the page file
up again and reboot to bring it into use."

Could some kind soul please give me idiot-proof,
step-by-step instructions as to how to do this and where to
go to carry out each step?

Thanks

Caz

Have you done this(when I increase page file after
awhile I will get a VM message)When I put together a box
for a friend,I'll set it to system managed size That way
it'll ALWAYS use as much as needed(as long as you have
hard drive space)Makes it easy when your working, the
system will always select the size.Windows 98,2000,ME all
came with system select as default,XP though has it as
1.5 X the ram size,so if it is 512MB,it should be set at
768MB(I have set it as high as 5000MB,and just tried to
copy and paste an address in the box and got the
warning).Do yourself a lot of good and set it to system
selected size. Also if you delete that .sys your system
may not work properly!change the page file and reboot.I
have mine set there and haven't seen the warning in over
a year!I put together over 50 computers for friends and
they never compain about a VM warning. ------------
-------------------------------------------------------
start--control panel--performance and maintenance,click
the system icon--click advance tab--under performance
click settings--click the advance tab on that--under
virtual memory click change--check circle next to system
managed size, after you highlighted the drive at top,if
you have more than one,do them all like this--click OK--
OK--OK--Click restart for changes to take effect button.

Also start---my computer---right click on the drive (C)--
-properties---tools tab---under error checking,click
check now---then check fix errors and recover bad sectors-
--it may start to run,but should give you a message that
saysa it can't finish till it boots up,then reboot and
let it run through, this should fix any problems you have
then reset your page file to sysem managed size, you'll
never have any luck setting it at no file.System manage
size is the no brainer, seeing your post as having loys of
hard drive space,if you get close to filling it up then
ya set it to a lower number but My 512 mb RAM The hard
drive is almost empty sounds like if you set it at system
managed size you'll never have to worry again.

You're not going to like the solution i offer..
I had similar problems and did everything , including
going in and trying to uninstall programs i didn't use or
used rarely..
I run XPPro Finally I had to trun off computer.. when
reboot starts press the keyboard to reboot,,, choices
will come up to reboot using cd setup..
yes
you must have your original start cd for whatever
windows program you are running and
when warning comes up to continue Yes
It will ask if want to REPAIR YOUR PROGRAMS OR REINSTALL
ALL

YES TO REINSTALL... REPAIRING DID NOT WORK FOR ME AND
TAKES THE SAME AMT OF TIME.. BUT WITH FULL REINSTALL YOU
WILL LOSE PROGRAMS YOU LOADED AFTER YOU SET UP YOUR
COMPUTER SO BE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING .. YOU PROBABLY
SHOULD ALSO BACK UP SYSTEM BEFROE DOING THIS

DO YOU WANT TO PARTITION... YES... CHOOSING NTSF YES ( IF
THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE)

YOU WILL BE ASKED TO CHOOSE WHICH ( IT WILL SHOW A LIST
OF EITHER ONE PARTITION WITH A NMANE LIKE DRIVE C OR IT
WILL SHOW SEVERAL SEVERAL CHOICES..... choose the
partition with the higher value THAT MEANS THE ONE WITH
THE LARGEST NUMBER LIKE 40000 MB AS COMPARED TO THE ONE
WITH 800 MB YOU WANT THE BIG ONE

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AND GO...
IF YOU HAVE AOL OR SO YOU WILL N EED TO REINSTALL

OH YES,,, DISABLE ALL ANTIVIRUS WARE.. AND IF YOU HAVE
GOBACK BY ROXIO ALSO JUST DISABLE IT..

HOPE THIS HELLPS .. BUT AS WITH ALL ADVICE BE CAREFUL
I RUN XPPRO SO YOUR SITUATION MIGHT BE DIFFERENT..

INCIDENTALLY , MY SYSTEM IS RUNNING FINE NOW
