Low Memory-can't run programs

Hello, this concerns my company computer:
generic name, 256 meg ram, 20 gig hard drive, (using just 1/4 of space),
Winxp, 700 mghz, AOL Mcaffee Antivirus, AOL spyware, Adaware, Spybot, did not
have any indication of virus infection over the last weeks. Updates on
regular basis.

Computer has slowed down, won't let me open up:
Quattro Pro, says "unable to create storage for OLE 2 objects, make sure
SHARE is installed and disk space is available";
can pull up Quickbooks and do some things;
Word will come up but not able to open a document;
can't bring up WordPerfect (not enough memory to perform requested
operation),
Publisher (Windows is low on memory, or your hard disk is full)
Can get online (DSL-SBCYahoo)tried to download free antivirus scan from
Mcaffee and Norton but won't let me do it. Tried to run Mcaffee antivirus on
computer, but doesn't seem to have enough memory to run any of the programs.

Had reformatted hard drive in Feb. and put on Winxp and reloaded all of the
programs and My Documents. Didn't seem to have any problems until yesterday,
maybe had started running a little slow week before last. Computer was left
on night before last and we had a power failure so computer had to be
rebooted, but don't think that had anything to do with the problem. Unplugged
it and let it sit then rebooted.

Did a clean up of everything, won't let me defrag, won't let me uninstall or
install programs. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic, everything is good. Would
like to be able to find a virus program that I can burn and run from a CD to
see if there is a virus. Can't run any of my malware programs from hard
drive.

One other thing; in msconfig-Star-up tab SysRegistry and StateMgr (don't
remember quite how these are spelled) are not listed just Systray. I saw
where these three items should be checked. Should those two items be listed
and checked in Winxp?

Any help would be appreciated.

I will tell you that the AOL McAfee and spyware will drain your resources.
You don't have much to begin with.

Your computer is very marginal. Mcaffee and AOL suck such computers dry.
I would replace Mcaffee Antivirus with NOD32, AVG, PcCillin, or Kaspersky
(to name just a few). I would remove all AOL programs.

You should also consider increasing the RAM and replacing the drive with
something lots bigger.

Your RAM quantity is not unreasonable, but more would probably result
in improved performance.

I have not seen a lot of AOL related problems recently, at least not
nearly so many as there were a year or two ago. It used to a truism
that "Any problem of any kind on any computer running AOL software is
most likely caused by the shoddily programmed AOL software".

McAfee is a heavy load to put on a computer, especially one with only
256 mb of RAM.

Try booting your computer to "Safe Mode With Networking" and then
going online to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run their free
online scanner for a second opinion on the status of your system.

To do this turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key rapidly
just as soon as the first information of any kind shows on the screen.
If the normal Windows XP Startup "splash screen" shows then it is too
late and you will have to restart and try again. When the Windows XP
Startup Menu shows there will be a number of startup options,
including "safe mode with networking" which is what you need in this
instance.

Good luck
